Goa’s own Fashion Designer Mary Fernandes expresses her heart through an exclusive interview

World is trending everyday with new fashion styles. Giving the dress the best magic touch by a fashion professional always counts. Here we have our best fashion designer Mary Fernandez from Goa, who owns the Mary’s Couture. She is extremely specialized in gowns and western outfits.
Mary showcased her collections in the recently happened IJW, Goa. On day1 of IJW, Mary’s Couture launched bridal gowns, cocktail wear and evening gowns under the collection named “fusion”. The collection also eyes on Brides and Brides maid.

How can a Bride look fab without her Bridesmaid!

Her collections at Day 2 of IJW was all for cocktail parties – All straight cut dress with classy look.

1.You were a part of many great shows. Can you share some of your experiences?

Yes. I always wanted to be part of this Industry. I gain a lot of confidence by this. This industry has changed my life by coming across new people, Fashion Designs, Clients.

2.Can you tell something about Mary’s Couture?

Mary’s Couture is a western outfit brand located at Fatorda Margao, Goa. It is known for its Innovative, Contemporary and Simple designs to envision, teenaged and women in elegant look. Mary’s Couture is about Gowns, Cocktail Dresses and Wedding Gowns. Mary’s Couture was launched in 2014.

3.How did you choose your career, were you passionate about it from childhood?..

Yes, I was passionate from my childhood. It was all about my mother, even though she was sick, she took all burden and trouble on her head alone by herself to give as all that we need to be successful in our future careers. My mother is a tailor and looking at her I got more inspired, I want to keep my mother’s name, so I did my (CGDM) Commercial Garment Designing & Making from Carmel Collage Goa and later completed my Graduation in Fashion Designing and Masters in Fashion Designing from School of Fashion Technology (SOFT) at Pune. This all happened with help of my Mother’s support who encouraged me all the time to fulfill my dreams and here I am today as successful entrepreneur.

4.Tell us about your childhood, family etc

My childhood was very simple as all normal people. I have a small family, that’s my Mother, Father and Brother.
5.What is your take on fashion, like say, size zero?
Size Zero is a women’s clothing size in the US catalog size system. Size Zero often refers to extremely about the Individual, especially women and adolescent girls or trend associated with them.

6.Please tell us about your achievements

I have been felicitated at Photo Fest India 2017 at Kochi and felicitated at Photo Today 2017 Bangalore. Kochi is more in traditional wear; garments are more on traditional motifs. I have got lot of inspiration on how to use traditional motifs to western outfits to a different look and style where as Bangalore is more into fashion. I have got inspired with lot of thing like how to play with colors, fabric, and texture on designs and style with elegant look.

7.Have you done for films? Any plans?

At present I have not done any films, but yes want to start my collection in films as costume Designers.

8.Considering Indian climate, how often should an average woman take skin/ hair treatments?

It all depends on type of skin you have.

9.Nowadays men also seem interested in make ups. How do see the changes in the attitude of men over the time?

Over the time Men’s attitude has changed a lot. It is very important to be in style and it also depends on how you carry it.

10.People of Goa are open-minded and frank. How do you judge Goa as a market compared to other fashion cities like Bangalore and Mumbai?

Goa Market is very slow in terms of Fashion Industry as compared to Bangalore and Mumbai. But now want Goa to be the best in Fashion.

11.What are your current projects?

At Present I am working on new collection Beauty of Natural Pearls.

12.Can you tell about the International projects and its experiences?

International project was very good experience. It is on international level to see how our collection can be showcased. You also get good contact, good publicity and good market too. Also came across with many big designs and also gained lot of ideas from them.

13.As a woman entrepreneur from Goa, how do you feel it to be on top? Who all helped you in the process?

Feel very good. It’s only my mother who helped me to fulfill my dreams.

14.As a person who is willing to help and support others, what to do want to tell other budding woman entrepreneurs of the fashion industry?

I would say share your experience with other woman who have talent and don’t want to overcome with it. So they can also come up.
