Ninoshka Alvares Delaney is a national award winning fashion designer from Saligao, Goa who believes in Fashion with a Conscience. It was her childhood dream to be a fashion designer and it is her passion, hard work and determination which have madelebra her label “Ninoshka” a reality. Ninoshka holds a strong academic background in Fashion Design and Management over 7 years being a graduate of Fashion Design from SOFT, Pune and Masters from NIFT Mumbai. She worked in the fashion industry for 10 years, with roles ranging from export houses, to merchandising and designing.
Ninoshka always wished that her profession would act as a means for her to give back to nature and society in her own little way. Hence, after relocating to Goa in 2012 after her marriage, she launched her label Ninoshka which focuses on sustainable fashion and believes in the Reduce-Reuse-Recycle philosophy. All her products are made of natural and organic material. She works closely with handloom weavers from across India and uses handloom fabrics like Khadi, Ikat and malkha among others. Ninoshka’s products aim to create social improvement and environment awareness. She finds her inspiration in her collaboration with artisans. They lead simple lives, yet have minds of creative geniuses. She finds their childlike enthusiasm and positivity humbling and uplifting. Her penchant for minimalism urges her to create silhouettes which cater to all age groups, and have an international appeal despite its Indian identity.
The label was dormant for 3 years, thanks to motherhood, but Ninoshka was determined to come back to her dream, with the support of her husband Ashley, launched the lablel in 2016 again. She has been associated with the ministry of textiles as an empaneled designer, and was chosen as the best designer in the country for her Indo-western handloom shirts in 2016. She was also awarded the best women entrepreneur award by the British Deputy High council in January 2017.
During IFFI 2016, Ninoshka who was the opening designer for the fashion weekend, promised everyone a surprise and got the Chief minister of Goa to walk the ramp wearing her award winning khadi shirt . A first time ever occurrence; never been done before.
At the IFW, its not about who, but WHAT? The show at the International Fashion week 2017 promises to bring a thrill to the senses. In an attempt to bring two Eastern crafts together, she has created the Khadi-Shibori collection which will be showcased. The fabrics used in this product are organic cotton and cotton khadi. Khadi is an Indian textile wherein the yarn is hand spun and the fabric is handwoven. The organic cotton is dyed using Itajime Shibori, a hand dyeing technique of Japanese origin. The collection has been dyed in organic dyes such as lac and madder which are suitable to the earth and the skin.
Ninoshka been invited to participate as one of the Top 2 startups in the country for the Textiles India 2017 exhibition to be held in Gandhinagar in July. Her dream is to revive the handloom industry in Goa which has been non functional for 40 years.
