Wayanad – The Land of Spices and Mountains

Padmavathy Manoharan

It’s no joke that people call Kerala as God’s own country. Every nook and corner of Kerala is filled with beauty. But, the place very close to my heart is Wayanad. Visit Wayanad once and you’ll witness yourself. It is a place full of surprises which is a hill station in the plain Malabar region of Kerala.

There are a whole lot of places in Wayanad to make you go crazy about the place. Some of the places to make you stand in awe-stricken silence are Edakkal Caves, Soochipara Falls, Pookode lake, Banasura Sagar Dam, Kuruva Island and so on.

Edakkal Caves

This is the best place for trekking in Wayanad and mostly not suitable for the elderly people. But I made all my family members except my grandmother to go on with the trekking. Though everyone grouched about the impossibilities of reaching the destination, at the end of the trekking, everyone was happy that they decided to take on the adventurous trekking. It was one such beautiful and new experience. It is a difficult rocky path which will take about one hour for you to finish the tracking and reach the Caves. While climbing up, there will be lots of small shops for you, which will serve refreshing soft drinks and fruits.Having finished the trekking, it will be so satisfying that you chose the place to visit.

Soochipara Falls

This is one among the many waterfalls you could see in Wayanad. But this one will be the best. The place offers such beautiful sceneries. This place is also not advisable for kids and elderly people. You could choose to climb up and go near the peak of the falls or remain down and take bath and swim. Either way, are allowed. You can have your best time in this place which is deep in the woods.

Kuruva Island

This is a beautiful place where you have to walk a bit, cross a river in a fibre boat and then you’ll see the uniqueness of the place with such serenity and peace. It is one of the best places to visit in Wayanad.

Banasura Sagar Dam

This will be nothing like the other dams you visited. It is a dam but you’ll have more than that to get entertained. Children’s park, food stalls, play area and so on and you will get to go on boat rides, but the rides might be quite expensive. But it’s a very good place where you can have your best time with your family.

Pookode lake

Pookode Lake is also a place with total serenity. Though it might not be as interesting as the other places, it is a good place to spend time with your family, sit and talk and eat your snacks from the food stalls there. You can go on boat rides in the lake.

To sum it up, Wayanad is a place packed with surprises. It won’t fail to amaze you with its unique landscape and it gives you a whole lot of choices of places to visit. Here, there are many beautiful resorts as well. It is an extraordinary place to visit with your family, to spend a long weekend. This would be a budget-friendly trip and I’m sure you’ll enjoy a lot.
